Roebuck Hunting in Sweden!
For many hunters, 16 August marked the highlight of the year: the start of the roe deer hunting season. For Chris Hansen and his best friend Marcus, who have been hunting together since childhood, this day turned into an unforgettable experience. They were given the incredible opportunity to hunt on the renowned Trolle Ljungby Estate – a dream come true that they could hardly believe.
The anticipation was huge, as they were searching for a very special and very large roe deer that they had seen pictures of last year. The conditions were perfect, with ideal wind conditions that allowed them to hunt the area optimally. During the morning, there was also an opportunity to hunt geese, and Chris regretted not having his shotgun with him, as the geese flew in at a perfect shooting distance of 25 metres – a rare opportunity. But the main target remained the magnificent roebuck.
The tension rose when they spotted a roebuck. At first, there was uncertainty as to whether it was the buck they were looking for, as it did not seem mature enough, perhaps only four years old. But shortly afterwards, when a doe came out, the mature roebuck they were looking for appeared. Chris was able to take a shot in a brief moment of just one second, which felt very good. After the shot, it was a matter of waiting, although Chris was convinced that the buck had been hit and must have fallen on the spot.
The joy was overwhelming when they found the buck. It was lying exactly where they thought it would be, perfectly shot. This roebuck was something very special: a mature buck with beautiful pearls, white tips and roses. The estate called it the ‘Crab Claw’ because one of its antlers was actually shaped like a crab claw. The estate had been tracking this impressive buck for two to three years. He had come from the sea one day and settled in the area. They had already tried to shoot him the previous year, but without success. It was clear that this mature buck was ready to be shot, as he had already passed on his genes to past and future generations.
The emotions after the successful shot were indescribable. Chris described it as an honour to share this moment with his best friend and could hardly put his feelings into words. Even the experienced men in the team were trembling with excitement. It was a perfect day of hunting, the best imaginable, and hearts were beating faster.
This hunt was not only a success, but also a tribute to the passion for hunting and Swedish tradition. The ‘Crab Claw’ roebuck will undoubtedly be a lasting memory of this fantastic morning, a true treasure for eternity.
