Nordic Driven Hunt

Swedish hospitality and an excellent organization made the hunting day at Blekhem Estate an unforgettable experience.

It is a frosty winter morning when we meet for the welcome of hunting master Johan Nordenfalk in front of Blekhem Manor, which was built in the 19th century by his ancestor Baron Johan Nordenfalk. We are a group of hunters from all over Europe who want to hunt in Sweden with the Professional 2.0.

Blekhem is located in northern Småland, about 15 km north of Västervik. The estate has existed since the 14th century and today covers a total of approximately 4,000 hectares, of which 2,700 hectares are forest and 700 hectares are water. Blekhem is also a member of Wildlife Estates, an award that only a few estates in Europe have received for managing their game stocks in a sustainable manner.

It quickly becomes clear that it could be an exciting day: wild boar, roe deer, fallow deer, red deer, foxes, mouflon, and moose may be hunted in three drives, in accordance with the regulations. It is rare to have the opportunity to hunt so many different species of game at the same time. Just the thought of the possible sightings increases the anticipation.

The organization is calm and professional, so we quickly find ourselves on the driven hunt stands. Hunting is permitted once the stands are occupied. Soon, the first shots echo through the Swedish forest. Almost everyone has had the opportunity to fire a shot. After the first drive, the group, including the beaters, gather for an initial review over coffee and cinnamon buns. The hunt leader would like to know exactly what each hunter has seen, what they have bagged, and where they have missed. This approach reinforce the impression that everyone involved—both the hunters and the organizers—know exactly what their job is and how to behave.

In the second drive we can expect mouflon. And indeed, one of the hunters manages to bag a magnificent ram. The whole group is delighted with this special hunting success and looks forward to examining the ram later when it is brought back to camp. During the subsequent lunch together in the manor house, we are served an excellent moose goulash and apple pie. Thus fortified, we set off on the third drive. It takes place on a headland and offers most hunters a spectacular view of the sea – and more sightings!

As the game is laid out, the experiences of the day are exchanged with sparkling eyes. Every shooter has something exciting to report. The whole group had seen a lot of game anyway. With a heartfelt thank you to our hunting host Johan Nordenfalk and the team at Gut Blekhem, a wonderful day of hunting comes to an end, one that we will remember for a long time to come.
